Tax season can feel confusing when you’re unsure which documents you actually need. This checklist makes it easy so you never have to wonder again.

1. Personal Information

These items help your tax preparer identify you and file correctly.

  • Social Security numbers for you, spouse, and dependents

  • Driver’s license or state ID

  • Prior year’s tax return (helps catch deductions you missed)

2. Income Documents

Bring every form you received — even if you made only a little income.

  • W-2s (from all employers)

  • 1099-NEC (independent contractor work)

  • 1099-K (Cash App, Venmo, PayPal, eBay, Etsy, Uber, DoorDash, etc.)

  • 1099-INT or 1099-DIV (bank interest/dividends)

  • 1099-R (retirement withdrawals)

  • 1099-G (unemployment, state refunds)

  • Social Security benefit statement

  • Gambling winnings (W-2G)

If you received money, assume the IRS knows — bring the form.

3. Household & Life Changes (VERY IMPORTANT)

These change your tax refund:

  • New baby

  • Marriage or divorce

  • A dependent moved in

  • Moved states

  • Started school

  • Bought or sold a home

  • Changed jobs

Tell your tax pro about anything that changed last year.

Even people doing a small side hustle should bring this.
